Vampires

"Lillith" John Collier

The first recorded use of the Old Russian form Упирь (Upir') is commonly believed to be in a document dated 6555 (1047 AD). It is a colophon in a manuscript of the Book of Psalms written by a priest who transcribed the book from Glagolitic into Cyrillic for the Novgorodian Prince Vladimir Yaroslavovich.Upir' Likhyi " (Упирь Лихый), which means something like "Wicked Vampire." This apparently strange name has been cited as an example both of surviving paganism and of the use of nicknames as personal names.

I was noticing in my research that many vampires in history have not only been depicted as women, but as women with reddish hair.
I created an image from a stock photo of a female vampire with red hair. It carries some of the modern and historical traits of a vampire.

Redheads Are More Sensitive to Pain

Hello all!

I came across an interesting study that I heard on the radio and then researched online. I was pretty blown away, because i've always been able to feel everything even after the dentist gives me anesthesia....

August 6, 2009

Researchers believe redheads are more sensitive to pain because of a mutation in a gene that affects hair color. In people with brown, black and blond hair, the gene, for the melanocortin-1 receptor, produces melanin. But a mutation in the MC1R gene results in the production of a substance called pheomelanin that results in red hair and fair skin.

The MC1R gene belongs to a family of receptors that include pain receptors in the brain, and as a result, a mutation in the gene appears to influence the body’s sensitivity to pain. A 2004 study showed that redheads require, on average, about 20 percent more general anesthesia than people with dark hair or blond coloring. And in 2005, researchers found that redheads are more resistant to the effects of local anesthesia, such as the numbing drugs used by dentists.

“The reason we studied redheads in the beginning, it was essentially an urban legend in the anesthesia community saying redheads were difficult to anesthetize,” Dr. Sessler said. “This was so intriguing we went ahead and studied it. Redheads really do require more anesthesia, and by a clinically important amount.”

After publishing research on the topic, Dr. Sessler began hearing from redheads who complained about problems with dental pain and fear about going to the dentist. He said that when someone with red hair is considering a dental or other procedure requiring an anesthetic, they should talk to their doctor about the high probability that they are resistant to anesthetics.

“Because they’re resistant, many redheads have had bad experiences,” Dr. Sessler said. “If they go to the dentist or have a cut sutured, they’ll need more local anesthetic than other people.”

A History of Gingers

Mary Magdalene was said to have had long, flowing red hair, and is portrayed as a redhead in many historical images and texts. (psst.... click on the images to see them enlarged!)

Queen Elizabeth I was a natural-born redhead, a beautiful reenactment here played by Cate Blanchett

One of my favorite paintings by Edmund Leighton, called "Accolade" A princess knighting a noble fighter

This stunning image of Maureen Ohara shows off her inherently feminine and seductive nature

One of the most versatile, intelligent, and beautiful actresses of our lifetime, Julia Roberts

Lets not forget the sexiest, redheaded, crime-solving man on television, the one and only David Caruso, aka Horatio Caine.

Amy Adams, the quintessential fairy-tale copper-haired beauty

So, there you have it. A brief look into some of the amazing redheads in history. Sure, there are plenty more, and you can take a more in-depth look by picking up a book like this one:
The Redhead Encyclopedia: The Complete Book on Redhead History, Facts, & Folklore, by Stephen Douglas

What would you do if....

So I think this one is fun... if anyone wants to fill it out and repost it feel free!!!!

What would you do if.......

Stranded in a forest alone

I would probably use my cell phone to call someone for help..... haha, oh technology.

Sensed someone stalking you

Casually walk to the nearest public/lit area

You suddenly developed superhuman strength

I would move the state of Massachusetts right next to California

You saw a dead cat

Try hard not to cry... that's happened to everyone before! sad!!!

You saw a dead human

Probably stare at it with creepily intense interest

Someone anonymously sent a love note

Smile

You became blind

After mourning for years I would develop my voice and sing professionally

Your car broke down beside a graveyard

Take it as a sign from karma and try to convince myself it was just a coincidence

Your best friend called you at 4am

Not pick up the phone.... lol

You could bring back anyone from 6 feet under

I would bring back my grandpa so he could tell me more about his childhood

Someone keeps staring at you

Smile at them until they thought I was nuts

Someone ate your lunch

Intentionally? I'd be a little mad and then get another one.

You're at a stranger's funeral

Pretend like I'm family until I can subtly get out of there

You got 100 free spray cans

Spray cans?.... I don't know... recycle them?

A horse came chasing after you

Use my sixth sense to telepathically channel the horses brain waves in another direction

Desperation

Alright,
well it's been another rousing week of job hunting and laughing managers when I ask about hiring. I swear.. i'm going to be making lattes at 4am. I just know it. College degree and i'm going to be forced to work at a cafe.... why not just go to culinary school? Or better yet, work in Italy where at least the coffee is good!

I'm sort of renewing myself.... trying to start a new process in my life. I don't want to worry too much about any one thing, but I also have to be pro-active about situations that I know need to be fixed. Isn't it hard to be honest with yourself? So much easier to focus on other peoples shit...

I sat on the steps of my "sister" Megans apartment complex till she came home yesterday. I didn't know what else to do. I would have continued to drive around aimlessly but i was wasting too much gas... on the bright side, I did find a cute, cheap little cafe in the North end that serves fantastic butter cookies. Cafe Vittoria. check it out.... it's on Hanover.

Anyway, I think i've finally got my shit together. Another job interview today... .. some real estate company in allston.... doesn't sound too appealing.... but then again, neither does making lattes at 4am.

Wish me luck all of my wonderful fans! And keep pushin... your life might be tough.. but someone elses is always worse ;)
